As the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Guterres emphasizes the need for a lasting political solution, increased humanitarian aid, and adherence to international law, aiming to alleviate the ongoing suffering in the region.
The Hamas attack, which took place three years ago, resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and included the capture of 251 hostages. Guterres condemned this act of violence while also drawing attention to the significant casualties and devastation faced by Palestinians in Gaza. Reports from Gaza health authorities indicate that over 74,200 Palestinians have lost their lives during Israel’s military operations in the area.
While an October 2025 ceasefire has provided some temporary relief, Guterres noted that it has yet to achieve permanent security, adequate humanitarian support, or a viable route to recovery and peace. He stressed the importance of renewing efforts to create conditions where Israelis and Palestinians can coexist with security, dignity, and rights intact.
The Secretary-General’s appeal underscores the urgent need to end the cycle of violence and suffering affecting both communities. He advocates for international support to help establish a framework that allows for a peaceful resolution and long-term stability in the region.
