New York and Jakarta are exploring the possibility of a visit by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to the Indonesian capital. This follows a recent meeting between Mamdani and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in New York, where they discussed mutual urban challenges during the U20 Mayors Summit 2026.
Governor Pramono noted that discussions regarding Mamdani’s potential visit are still in the early stages, with no confirmed plans yet. The visit, if finalized, is expected to coincide with a conference in late October, though official announcements are pending.
During their meeting, the two officials exchanged insights on various issues common to both cities, including public transportation, traffic congestion, flooding, air pollution, and urban development financing. Mayor Mamdani showed interest in Jakarta’s strategies to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance public transportation networks. In particular, Pramono highlighted the Transjabodetabek project, which aims to connect Jakarta with its surrounding areas through a comprehensive transportation network.
Financial strategies also featured prominently in their discussions. Governor Pramono introduced Jakarta’s initiative to issue municipal bonds, termed Jakarta Bonds, to fund infrastructure and development projects. In response, Mamdani offered to facilitate collaboration between the financial teams of New York and Jakarta, fostering an exchange of expertise in municipal bond issuance.
This potential collaboration between the two cities underscores a shared commitment to tackling urban challenges through innovative solutions and financial cooperation. As discussions continue, both New York and Jakarta look forward to strengthening their partnership in addressing the complexities of modern urban governance.
