WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to reserve a username, enabling communication without revealing their phone numbers. This update, highlighted for its privacy benefits, is set to be available globally later this year. By reserving a unique username, users will have the option to share it instead of their phone number when initiating new chats.
To take advantage of this feature, users need to update their WhatsApp application and navigate to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. Notifications will be sent out to inform users when the feature is activated in their region. In contrast to social media platforms, WhatsApp will not be rolling out a public search directory for usernames. This means only those who know the precise username will be able to contact that user, aiming to reduce spam and unwanted messages.
Additionally, WhatsApp will offer an optional username key that users can share to exert more control over who can initiate conversations with them. While the username option will be available, it remains optional, allowing users to continue relying on phone numbers if they prefer.
This update is particularly beneficial for creators, businesses, and organizations that wish to maintain consistent identities across services provided by Meta Platforms. The ability to reserve matching usernames across different platforms could streamline identity management for these groups.
