Malaysia is setting its sights on a total of 33 medals at the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, which will take place from September 19 to October 4. The nation’s ambitious goal includes securing six golds, seven silvers, and 20 bronzes. According to the country’s Chef de Mission, Mohd Sumali Reduan, this target is considered achievable based on the current form of the athletes, their recent performances, medal potential, and the competitive landscape across Asia.
The Malaysian team has earmarked 13 sports disciplines as having strong medal prospects. These include track cycling, badminton, archery, diving, squash, and the traditional game of sepak takraw, as well as hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. In total, the contingent comprises 352 athletes supported by 185 officials, with the team competing in 30 of the 43 sports offered at the Games, covering 156 out of 469 events.
A prominent figure among the Malaysian athletes is wushu competitor Tan Cheong Min, who has been chosen to carry the national flag during the opening ceremony. Another key athlete is track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang, who is anticipated to play a significant role in driving Malaysia’s medal tally.
In addition to the Asian Games, Malaysia is also preparing for success at the Asian Para Games, which are scheduled for October 18–24. The country’s contingent in this event is aiming to bring home another set of medals, targeting six golds, 10 silvers, and 18 bronzes, further highlighting their commitment to excellence in regional sports competitions.
