Malaysia Proposes DNA Experts Deployment to Nepal, Boosting Forensic Services Market

Date:

In the wake of catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal, Malaysia is poised to send a team of DNA experts to assist in the identification of victims. Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced the country’s intent to deploy these specialists, pending approval from Nepal, with DNA identification efforts set to commence following the conclusion of search and rescue operations. The experts will focus on matching DNA samples from recovered bodies with those provided by the families of missing Malaysian citizens.

Currently, there are 55 Malaysians who remain unaccounted for amid the disasters. Malaysia has proactively gathered DNA samples from the relatives of these missing individuals. Due to limited facilities in the affected areas, some bodies were buried hastily, underscoring the need for DNA testing as a crucial tool for identification.

The Malaysian team, comprised of 11 personnel, is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue equipment. This includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment designed for tunnel rescues. Additionally, they have brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their operations.

Malaysia is hopeful that the combined efforts of search, rescue, and DNA identification will provide clarity and closure to families awaiting news of their loved ones. By deploying cutting-edge technology and expertise, the mission aims to streamline the process of locating missing victims and confirming their identities.
