Malaysia Proposes $100M Currency Swap to Boost Maldives’ Economy.

Date:

Amidst ongoing efforts to strengthen international economic relationships, the Maldives and Malaysia are exploring new avenues for cooperation. Following a recent state visit by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to the Maldives, the two nations are considering a US$100 million currency swap facility. This initiative aims to bolster economic ties and create a more robust framework for bilateral trade.

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu expressed support for Malaysia’s openness to the currency swap, highlighting its potential to enhance economic collaboration between the countries. The facility is expected to be facilitated by Bank Negara Malaysia in conjunction with the Maldives Monetary Authority, although specific terms are still under negotiation.

During the visit on September 14-15, the leaders of both countries also reached a preliminary agreement to commence discussions on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). President Muizzu emphasized the importance of these initiatives in expanding trade and generating new business opportunities for both Malaysian and Maldivian enterprises.

Beyond economic measures, the discussions between Malaysia and the Maldives covered a broad spectrum of cooperation areas. These included trade and investment, education, healthcare, tourism, sustainable development, Islamic affairs, and defense. Such comprehensive dialogue underscores the commitment of both nations to deepen their strategic partnership.

Further solidifying their international cooperation, Malaysia and the Maldives agreed to enhance their collaboration within global organizations such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Commonwealth. This multifaceted approach aims to strengthen their influence and cooperation on the world stage.
