In a call for transformation within the United Nations Security Council, Indonesia has emphasized the necessity for the body to evolve in response to the challenges presented by artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. Speaking at a UN meeting in New York, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono highlighted how swiftly the global security environment is changing due to advancements in AI, autonomous weaponry, and nuclear technologies.
Minister Sugiono argued that the current structure of the Security Council, designed post-World War II, is ill-prepared to tackle today’s intricate security issues without significant reform. Indonesia’s call for change focuses on enhancing transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness within the 15-member council. The nation is advocating for improved representation of developing countries and the Global South in international decision-making processes.
Reforming the Security Council, according to Sugiono, should aim at rebuilding trust in its capabilities and ensuring it can effectively address modern global security challenges. He echoed concerns about the rapid pace of technological developments, which are outstripping the ability of international governance frameworks to manage them, especially in the realms of AI and autonomous weapons systems.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has similarly raised alarms over the swift advancements in technology, particularly AI, warning of unpredictable and new risks due to the lack of adequate governance structures. The increasing military application of AI is a growing concern for governments and international bodies, which highlights the urgent need for responsible regulation of these emerging technologies.
Indonesia, which is aiming for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2029-2030 term, continues to push for reforms that would make the council more representative and effective. This ongoing advocacy reflects Indonesia’s commitment to ensuring that the Security Council evolves to meet the demands of contemporary global challenges.
