Indonesia is positioning itself as a key player in the global artificial intelligence (AI) industry by leveraging its abundant critical mineral resources, particularly nickel and copper. These minerals are vital for developing the digital infrastructure necessary for AI technologies, including batteries, electrical equipment, and data center systems.
The Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, underscored the importance of integrating mineral processing into the development of resilient, efficient, and sustainable digital infrastructure. This integration is expected to create greater domestic value and enhance Indonesia’s role in the AI sector.
Indonesia’s significant contribution to the global mineral supply chain is underscored by its control of approximately 62% of the world’s mined nickel production. Deputy Minister Patria emphasized that the country’s mineral advantage should be augmented with responsible processing practices, environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices.
Beyond mineral resources, Patria highlighted the need for comprehensive infrastructure elements to support AI growth, such as reliable electricity, fiber-optic networks, cooling systems, skilled labor, and effective governance frameworks. These components are crucial for Indonesia’s ambition to establish itself as a regional AI hub.
With its rich mineral resources, burgeoning digital economy, and expanding technology workforce, Indonesia aims to generate higher-value jobs and bolster its domestic technological capabilities. This strategic focus is intended to firmly position the country within the global AI landscape while fostering sustainable economic growth.
