Indonesia and France are embarking on an ambitious cultural collaboration, focusing on heritage conservation, film production, and the arts, to enhance cultural exchange and visibility between the two nations. This initiative, discussed during a meeting in Paris on October 7 between Indonesian Culture Minister Fadli Zon and French Culture Minister Catherine Pégard, aims to implement joint cultural programs that include music performances, fashion exhibitions, and fine art showcases.
The partnership builds upon the 2025 Borobudur Declaration, designed to deepen cultural ties and engage the public with the cultural heritage of both countries. Indonesia is set to collaborate with the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH) Foundation to revitalize ten key heritage projects across eight provinces, including the conservation of sites such as Tjong A Fie Mansion in North Sumatra and Borobudur Temple in Central Java. The initiative also emphasizes the protection of Borobudur Temple’s historic reliefs from environmental and climate pressures through improved conservation methods in cooperation with France’s Centre des monuments nationaux.
A significant component of this cultural partnership is the enhancement of film industry ties. Indonesia is planning to launch the Indonesia International Film Co-production Fund by 2027, with technical support from France’s National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image. Additionally, both countries are preparing for the third Indonesia-France Film Lab at the JAFF Market, which seeks to foster collaboration between filmmakers and bolster international film projects. Furthermore, discussions are underway to boost Indonesia’s participation in the Cannes Film Festival by 2028.
This expanded cooperation is expected to create new opportunities for cultural exchange, protect Indonesia’s historic sites, and strengthen the collaboration between Indonesian and French artists, filmmakers, and cultural institutions. The efforts underscore a shared commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting artistic endeavors across borders.
