Indonesia and Australia Begin Major Joint Military Exercise in East Java

Date:

In a move to bolster defense and security ties, Indonesia and Australia have commenced the Keris Woomera 26 joint military exercise in Banyuwangi, East Java. This exercise, running from October 12 to 20, involves approximately 1,235 Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) personnel and 1,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. The initiative underscores the ongoing commitment between the two nations to enhance their bilateral cooperation in defense.

Vice Admiral Justin Jones, the Australian Joint Operations Commander, emphasized the significance of the exercise, noting it as a reflection of the deep-rooted partnership between Indonesia and Australia. He highlighted the importance of trust, mutual respect, and close cooperation in this relationship, which positions Indonesia as a critical and enduring partner for Australia. The Keris Woomera exercise forms Australia’s largest overseas military training event for the year, showcasing the strength of this partnership.

The military drills include a variety of complex operations such as amphibious landings, live-fire exercises, and coordinated maritime operations involving the navies of both countries. These activities aim to improve joint operational capabilities, tackle regional deployment challenges, and enhance deterrence against military coercion in the Indo-Pacific region.

Australia’s contributions to the exercise include the amphibious ship HMAS Choules, HMAS Perth, and HMAS Stalwart, as well as C-130J Hercules aircraft, PC-21 aircraft, M777 howitzers, and HIMARS launchers. Meanwhile, Indonesia has deployed a Diponegoro-class corvette, artillery, multiple-launch rocket systems, Bell 412 and Panther helicopters, and Super Tucano aircraft.

First held in 2024, the Keris Woomera exercise occurs biennially, providing an opportunity for both nations to enhance their military coordination and regional security cooperation. This exercise is a testament to the ongoing commitment of Indonesia and Australia to work together towards a stable and secure region.
