Indonesia has underscored its dedication to international collaboration in artificial intelligence by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This announcement came during discussions between Indonesian Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Hartarto voiced Indonesia’s enthusiasm for establishing a framework for AI governance that champions equitable development, centers on human innovation, respects national sovereignty, embraces inclusive multilateralism, and aligns with United Nations values.
The Indonesian government is keen to enhance its role within the newly formed organization, seeking a prominent position within WAICO’s secretariat. In addition, Indonesia is advocating for strengthened partnerships with China, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. Minister Hartarto emphasized the need for accelerated market access for Indonesian products and extended an invitation to Chinese enterprises to increase their investments in fields like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks within Indonesia.
In a gesture of diplomatic support, Indonesia has also expressed its backing for China’s chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. This support is part of a broader strategy to foster closer economic ties between the two nations. Hartarto proposed the organization of a bilateral business summit to coincide with an anticipated meeting between Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto and China’s President Xi Jinping, aimed at further strengthening economic cooperation.
These moves reflect Indonesia’s strategic ambitions to become a significant player in the global AI landscape while simultaneously bolstering its trade and economic relationships with China. As both countries continue to explore new avenues for collaboration, the emphasis remains on fostering innovation and ensuring that AI developments benefit all stakeholders equitably.
