Trump Highlights AI’s Economic Potential as ‘Super Intelligence’ at UN Meeting

Date:

The global discourse on artificial intelligence (AI) management is intensifying as governments and tech companies grapple with the technology’s rapid evolution. Amidst this backdrop, U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a linguistic shift in how AI is referred to in official documents, suggesting the term “super intelligence” to better capture its capabilities. This move was announced during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Trump criticized the existing term “artificial” for diminishing the perceived potential of AI, advocating instead for terminology that reflects its transformative power. While addressing the international community, he dismissed concerns about AI’s potential dangers as overstated and expressed opposition to global regulatory frameworks. He emphasized the economic potential of AI, comparing its impact to that of previous technological revolutions.

Despite calls from over 20 global leaders for enhanced international cooperation, safety testing, and common standards for AI, Trump’s administration remains skeptical of such measures. The President’s comments underscore a significant divergence in international approaches to AI governance, as debates continue over how best to navigate the technology’s risks and rewards.

In addition to rebranding AI, Trump proposed the creation of an “AI Force” and the appointment of an AI czar to oversee AI development in the United States. However, the administration has yet to release detailed plans on the operational framework of this proposed structure.

The term “superintelligence” already holds a specific connotation in AI research, typically referring to systems with intellectual capabilities far surpassing human abilities. Trump’s broader application of the term aims to align public perception with the technology’s potential, signaling a strategic shift in how the U.S. might position itself in the AI landscape.
