Malaysia’s robust economic ties with China continue to flourish as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim embarks on a three-day working visit to the Asian economic giant. Arriving in Shanghai on Tuesday, Anwar’s trip underscores the long-standing partnership between the two nations, with a focus on enhancing bilateral relations, boosting trade, and expanding cooperation in emerging technologies.
During his visit, Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, will split his time between Shanghai and Hangzhou. In Shanghai, he is set to participate in WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, delivering a keynote address at the accompanying WorldSkills Conference. These engagements provide a platform for Anwar to highlight Malaysia’s interest in artificial intelligence and digital trade as key areas for international cooperation.
The prime minister’s agenda includes a high-level meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou on Thursday. This meeting aims to solidify economic collaborations and encourage Chinese investment in Malaysia. Notably, Malaysia has been China’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, with bilateral trade reaching US$113.82 billion between January and August this year, reflecting the strong economic relationship.
Anwar’s visit to Hangzhou will also see him at the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo, where Malaysia is recognized as one of the Guest Countries of Honour. Here, the prime minister will engage with Chinese business and technology leaders, emphasizing the importance of foreign investment in Malaysia’s growing digital economy.
This visit marks a significant step in reinforcing the strategic and economic ties between Malaysia and China, as both nations look to collaborate on future-focused technologies and trade innovations. Through these engagements, Anwar seeks to position Malaysia as a competitive player in the evolving global digital landscape.
