Cambodia Modernizes Transport System to Boost Global Trade Links

Date:

Cambodia is intensifying its efforts to modernize transport and logistics infrastructure as part of a strategic move to enhance trade competitiveness and bolster its integration into regional and global supply chains. This initiative is spearheaded by Prime Minister Hun Manet, who recently led a Council of Ministers meeting to assess the progress of these developments.

The meeting focused on reviewing advancements in supply chains, trade routes, and transportation systems. Officials discussed strategies to reduce transit costs and strengthen connections between domestic markets and international trade corridors. These efforts are guided by the Comprehensive Master Plan on the Cambodian Intermodal Transport and Logistics System 2023–2033, which outlines 174 projects across various transport sectors, including roads, railways, waterways, ports, aviation, logistics, and intermodal transport.

By upgrading its transport infrastructure, Cambodia aims to support key sectors such as manufacturing and agro-processing while encouraging growth in higher-value industries. The government also seeks to attract foreign investment to reinforce Cambodia’s role in regional and global trade networks.

The master plan’s focus on intermodal transport is expected to optimize the efficiency and connectivity of different transport modes, thereby improving the overall logistics landscape. By facilitating smoother and more cost-effective transit, Cambodia hopes to create a more conducive environment for trade and economic growth.

This initiative underscores Cambodia’s commitment to positioning itself as a significant player in international trade by ensuring that its transport and logistics systems are competitive and aligned with global standards. As these projects unfold over the next decade, the country anticipates enhanced economic prospects and strengthened trade partnerships worldwide.
