In a move to fortify economic ties within the BRICS bloc, Russian President Vladimir Putin has advocated for the establishment of a joint insurance mechanism and a cooperative grain market among member states. Addressing the BRICS outreach session, Putin emphasized the necessity for these countries to bolster autonomous channels for the flow of capital, labor, and technology. This initiative is aimed at diminishing their exposure to external pressures.
Putin outlined the proposal amidst the backdrop of Western sanctions that have been impacting Russian energy exports, particularly through restrictions on insurance services. The European Union, alongside the G7 and the United Kingdom, have set limitations on Western companies offering insurance for vessels transporting Russian oil, contingent upon adherence to specific price-cap stipulations. Against this setting, Putin suggested that the proposed insurance mechanism and grain market could serve as valuable resources for other BRICS nations.
Praising the efforts of the New Development Bank established by BRICS countries, Putin underscored the significance of expanding financial collaboration among emerging economies. He advocated for a comprehensive strategy in tackling global issues, urging BRICS nations to confront both the immediate repercussions and the foundational causes of international crises.
The Russian leader also called on countries from the Global South to unite in efforts to reform global governance structures and address both traditional and modern security challenges. Putin pointed to the increasing participation in the BRICS alliance as evidence of a growing global interest in the group’s mission to champion an independent stance on worldwide economic and political matters.
