The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated that operators of the Boeing 737 Max examine their aircraft for potential structural cracks, specifically in the fuselage. This directive will require inspections across approximately 471 planes, with the process slated to start in September. The primary focus of these inspections is a component called the bear strap, which comprises structural sheets that reinforce the fuselage around the exit doors.
Concerns over these components are not unfounded, as similar cracks have been previously identified in older models, the Boeing 737 Next Generation series, which led to mandatory checks for those aircraft as well. Although no cracks have been discovered in the 737 Max fleet to date, the FAA has highlighted that the design and manufacturing processes of the 737 Max are akin to those of its predecessors, suggesting the possibility of similar issues arising.
The FAA has cautioned that if such cracks remain undetected, they could compromise a crucial structural element of the aircraft, potentially impacting its overall structural integrity. In response to these concerns, Boeing has expressed its cooperation with airlines to address the issue since it was first recognized in 2019. The company endorses the FAA’s inspection requirements, stating that the checks are crucial in identifying and resolving any issues before they escalate to critical levels.
