India Seeks Economic Boost via Critical Minerals Deal with Indonesia

Date:

Next week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to Indonesia for discussions with President Prabowo Subianto, where the focus is expected to center on cooperation in the area of critical minerals. Indian Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty has indicated that the two nations are working on several memorandums of understanding across various sectors, including critical minerals, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, education, and space. Some of these agreements are anticipated to be finalized during the visit, while others are still being negotiated.

India is looking to deepen its ties with Indonesia to enhance its processing and manufacturing capabilities in the realm of critical minerals. The envisioned collaboration seeks to establish production facilities within Indonesia, ensuring a steady supply for both domestic Indian needs and global markets. Additionally, there are ongoing talks regarding potential joint ventures with Indonesian partners, which could further solidify the partnership between the two countries.

Indonesia, known as the world’s largest producer of nickel, has emerged as a key ally for nations aiming to secure reliable sources of critical minerals essential for the production of electric vehicles, batteries, and other cutting-edge technologies. The Indonesian government mandates that nickel must be processed domestically prior to export, a policy that has spurred investment in downstream industries. This strategic positioning makes Indonesia a vital partner for countries looking to bolster their critical mineral supply chains.

This visit is part of India’s broader strategy to enhance its critical mineral supply chains and lessen reliance on external sources. By fostering economic cooperation with Indonesia, India aims to not only safeguard its supply of these essential materials but also to expand its economic footprint in the region. The discussions and potential agreements stemming from Modi’s visit could pave the way for significant developments in various sectors, reinforcing the ties between the two nations.
